What Is The Heart Chakra And What Does It Have To Do With Affinity?

Spiritual Information Within The Fourth Chakra

What is the heart chakra? To understand it, it helps to know that in yogic tradition, the body contains seven main energy centers, known as the chakra system, which run from the base of the spine to the crown of the head. The heart chakra is located in the sternum near the heart and is sometimes called the fourth chakra. At the center of this system, it bridges the three lower chakras, which govern physical and earthly concerns like survival, sexuality, and personal power, and the three upper chakras, which govern higher spiritual awareness, intuition, and connection to the divine. This unique middle position is why the heart chakra is often seen as the point where body and spirit meet. It contains spiritual information what is the heart chakra the fourth chakraabout oneness and affinity. The fourth chakra also stores concepts about love, such as unconditional love, human love, compassion, and healing. It also holds information about intra-personal and inter-personal relationships, and our ability to give and receive love from others.

The heart chakra’s attributes include its Sanskrit name, Anahata, meaning “unstruck” or “unhurt.” Its associated color is green, sometimes with pink, reflecting love and compassion. Anahata is connected to the element of air, symbolizing openness, freedom, and the breath of life. Its mantra is “Yam,” often chanted during meditation, and its symbol is a twelve-petaled lotus containing two intersecting triangles, representing the balance of giving and receiving love.

When your heart chakra is imbalanced or blocked, your life may not run as it should. This may also occur when you are suffering from overactive and underactive chakras. You may experience sadness, ill health, amongst other syndromes. This may also happen if your heart chakra is too open or underactive.

To heal your fourth chakra, the most common practice is energy balancing to clear heart chakra blockages. Heart chakra healing may be called opening or clearing. The goal of the exercise is to reestablish the energy flow and overall balance.

Signs of a Blocked Heart Chakra

When the fourth energy center is out of balance, heart chakra blockage symptoms can show up in different areas of life:

  • Difficulty giving or receiving love
  • Holding onto grief or resentment
  • Feeling isolated or emotionally detached
  • Lack of empathy for yourself and others
  • Fear of intimacy

Physical and Emotional Effects of Imbalance

Because this energy center is linked to the heart, lungs, upper back, and circulation, a blockage may also manifest physically—through chest tightness, shallow breathing, poor circulation, upper back tension, or a weakened immune system. Emotionally, an imbalanced heart chakra often brings persistent sadness, loneliness, and difficulty trusting others.

When the heart chakra is balanced and open, the benefits extend to both body and mind: healthy blood pressure and circulation, deeper breathing, emotional resilience, compassionate relationships, and a genuine sense of inner peace and connection.

Signs of an overactive heart chakra can include:

  • Losing yourself in relationships
  • Poor boundaries and people-pleasing
  • Neglecting your own needs
  • Judgmental or possessive behavior

Why Is Healing the Heart Chakra Necessary?

Our lives are choked full of relationships of all kinds, good, bad, and indifferent. The heart chakra can be affected in many ways by these negative and positive interactions.
When we face life challenges, we tend to cope in one of two ways: we may close off and lessen the energy around the circumstance, or we may intensify our energy to battle it. Either way, these events can affect how we cope with them until we become secure in our energy centers. We can have experienced heart chakra pain in many ways:

  • We may have been wounded during our youth.
  • Bad endings to relationships
  • Discounting personal trauma.
  • Being overwhelmed by others’ needs, draining us of emotional resources

Any of these events can show up as heart chakra blockage symptoms, leading to an overactive or blocked fourth energy center that needs balancing.

Signs of a Blocked vs. Overactive Heart Chakrais my heart chakra blocked

A blocked (underactive) heart chakra often shows up as difficulty trusting others, emotional numbness, fear of intimacy, holding grudges, and feelings of isolation or loneliness. Physical effects can include tension in the chest, shallow breathing, shoulder tightness, and lowered immunity.

An overactive heart chakra, by contrast, tends to produce the opposite imbalance: codependency, people-pleasing, losing yourself in relationships, jealousy, and giving love with strings attached. Physically, it can manifest as chest pressure, heart palpitations, and upper back discomfort.

Emotionally, both imbalances affect how we bond, grieve, and accept ourselves, so recognizing your specific pattern is the first step toward healing.

How to Open and Heal the Heart Chakra

Once you know whether your fourth energy center is blocked or overactive, you can bring it back into balance with concrete practices:

  • Heart chakra meditation: Visualize a green or pink light expanding at the center of your chest with each breath, imagining old wounds dissolving as the light grows stronger.
  • Affirmations: Repeat phrases such as “I am worthy of love,” “I give and receive love freely,” and “I forgive myself and others” daily.
  • Yoga poses: Heart-openers like Camel (Ustrasana), Cobra (Bhujangasana), and Fish Pose (Matsyasana) physically release the chest and stimulate the fourth energy center.
  • Pranayama breathing: Deep, slow diaphragmatic breathing softens chest tension and restores energy flow.
  • Gratitude and forgiveness work: Journaling about what you appreciate and consciously releasing resentment directly nourishes the heart energy.
  • Acts of kindness: Balanced generosity, without self-sacrifice, re-trains a blocked or overactive heart to give and receive freely.

Practiced consistently, these methods help the heart chakra heal, restoring emotional resilience and healthy connection with others.

What Is the Heart Chakra, What Is Affinity and Oneness, And How Do I Find Them?

Affinity is a force that combines things or energies and creates the experience of oneness. You learned about it in school when your chemistry teacher taught you about chemical reactions. But it is also found in spiritual attractions, and in the case of human relationships is often based on affection. Affinity is neither good nor bad; it is not positive or negative but is a neutral force. The purpose of affinity is to allow us to experience oneness with another as Spirit.

Another term for oneness is unity consciousness; it relates to contentment with all life, including family, community, people, plants, animals, and the Earth. You know you are experiencing oneness when you accept things and people as they are, without judgment or expectations.

If you allow oneness with God, you can learn to love yourself and others because it helps you see how each one fits within the overall divine plan. Oneness helps you realize you are part of the whole and also to know where you fit within the total pattern. When you experience oneness, you find satisfaction and peace in fulfilling your unique part. Meditation is a great way to experience oneness, as it can help you let go of your physical focus.

Learning how to open your heart chakra with meditation is one way to gain affinity and oneness that can change your life. Some signs of these awakenings aren’t always pleasant. You may feel extreme emotions; however, once you get accustomed to sensing that openness, life changes for the better for you and everyone around you.
