Have You Ever Been So Depressed It Hurts?
In our society, there are so many possible causes of trauma that people face every day. If you have had a major trauma in your life you know that the healing journey can be difficult, to say the least. Some of you may never rebound from your challenge. Some of you feel such intense guilt and may have slipped into a place of depression and pain. Some of you may face emotions and feelings that you just can’t handle. You may be experiencing an overwhelming lack of self-worth. The truth is that when unbearable emotional pain is too much your basic emotions, those positive emotions that keep life worth living may escape you.
There are some very common causes of trauma that can result in post-traumatic stress (PTSD):
- The death of someone close to you.
- Divorce or the ending of an intense relationship.
- Major household moves.
- Being sexually abused or violated.
- Being in an abusive relationship.
- Personal injury or severe illness.
- Experiencing a natural catastrophe.
- Being in the vicinity of civil unrest, war, or an act of terrorism.
- Being abandoned by a parent, spouse or alienated by family members.
- Seeing someone die by accident or suicide.
- Being the victim of a violent crime.
How To Deal With Extreme Emotional Pain And Begin Your Healing Journey
The hard fact is that you may not possess the tools to get past the types of emotional pain that trauma can bring into your life. Learning how to deal with negative emotions that stem from any form of trauma, big or small, generally is near to impossible for you alone. You may not only find it difficult to go about your daily tasks but one of the major emotional pain symptoms is not being able to think straight. This can lead to making bad decisions.
What do you do? How can you move forward in your life? Especially after you endure something that happens in your life that may defy your capacity to feel secure safe, and sucks the hope from your future? Let’s face it when you find yourself in a stressful situation it takes a strong mind and will to maneuver your way through the fog.
Being able to reclaim your identity when you are faced with real adversity may cause you to question what you have understood to be true about yourself, those close to you as well as the world in general. These bad feelings resulting from traumatic experiences and the kinds of emotions that result can be debilitating. This is when it is time to reach out. There are healing journey counseling methods and approaches that can prove to can be very helpful and often quite necessary.
What Does Emotional Pain Feel Like?
Some of the symptoms of PTSD can show up in your life as:
- Excessive worrying and anxiety.
- Hypervigilance.
- Experiencing flashbacks.
- Not being able to sleep.
- Episodes of disassociation.
- Eating dysfunction.
- Persistent feeling of helplessness and alone.
You may not fully understand how strongly you have been affected by experiencing trauma unless you can stand back to take a serious look at yourself. If only you could be alerted to signs that you need help before depression, emotional pain or any of the other negative effects take hold in your life.
The truth of the matter is that post-traumatic stress and the symptoms associated with it are common. It is a natural function of how the brain handles this type of event in your life. It is all about being human. It is when you lose the ability to control the negativity and it displays as a disorder that it becomes an issue.

How To Stop The Pain Of Depression And Stress
You are an individual. Your life experiences are unique to you. So it stands to reason that the therapeutic methods needed to help you would also need to be suited to your specific needs. One size does not fit all. It may take some searching and testing to find exactly what will help you. Or you can look for someone with a varied tool belt of therapies that they can use to assist in your recovery.
By the way, I used the word “assist” very specifically. No one can “cure” PTSD in effect. It comes from within you. It is more about an internal emotional healing or even spiritual healing than a physical disorder. Eben medication will not cure you but only mask the pain until you are ready to deal with it.
Anyone of the many different treatment or combination of therapies may assist you so it best to search out someone that has more than one tool to help. You need to find someone that can assess your symptoms and situation and take the appropriate actions to help you move forward.
Learning How To Deal With Negative Emotions
Your healing journey starts with the first step, a small step, and then each step, slowly and at your own pace, after that.
Sandra Cooze, our guest today, is a trauma survivor and now stirred in her a passion and dedication to help others move along the same path to emotional and physical well-being.
I would like to recount one of the healing quotes from Sandra “Everything that ever happened in your life becomes part of your story. But no part of your story should have any control over your emotions and with that control over your life. You should always be in control of your life and make it what you want it to be. Yet, sometimes a traumatic event can stop you in your tracks and you become a prisoner of that trauma for many years and sometimes even for the rest of your life. Life story transformation means changing how you feel about a part of your story so that you can rise above it and be the person you are meant to be – like a Phoenix rising from the ashes.”
Sandra is a Certified Trauma Coach, Traumatic Incident Reduction Facilitator, Life Transformation Coach, Reiki Master/Teacher, Advanced Soul Realignment® Practitioner, Meditation Teacher, and writer.
Here are some of the questions we ask Sandra:
- What traumatic events were you faced within your life?
- What motivated you to begin your healing journey?
- How did you find your way into healing after hitting rock bottom?
- Would you be the person you are today if it wasn’t for the struggles in your past?
- What was the toughest challenge you overcame in your life?
- What drew you to becoming a Trauma Coach? (part of the answer is a quote from Oprah ‘Turn your Wounds into Wisdom’)
- Do you work mainly with sexual assault and rape victims or do you also work with people who experienced other traumatic events?
- What advice do you have for people who are currently struggling with their traumatic past?
- Can you recommend one approach that our listeners can implement today to begin their healing journey?
- What would working with you look like?
