What Do You Know About Energy Healing?
Have you heard of energy healing therapy? If so, how does energy healing work? What are the benefits of energy healing therapy? If you have never had an energy healing session, what is it like? Before I answer these and more questions, I would like to share a little about my philosophy and a brief history of my experience as an energy healer.
I began my first formal energy healing training while living in London in 1996. Over the years, my energy healing techniques and style have evolved, mostly through hands-on experience. I have given healing sessions to 1000s of people.
Energy Healing Therapy And How Does Energy Healing Work?
How Does Energy Healing Work: A Complete Guide
Energy healing is based on the idea that the body has a subtle energy field that can become blocked or depleted, contributing to stress, discomfort, and imbalance. Practitioners work to restore the healthy flow of this energy, supporting the body’s natural ability to relax and heal itself.
This guide walks through the topic in five clear stages, each covered once in sequence — no repetition, no detours:
- The Concept: what subtle energy is and why its flow matters.
- The Process: what actually happens during a typical session, from consultation to hands-on or hands-off techniques.
- The Evidence: what research and client studies say so far, including the physiological markers (heart rate, blood pressure, anxiety levels) measured in energy-healing studies.
- The Modalities: the main approaches — such as Reiki, acupuncture-based work, and medical intuition — and how they differ.
- The Benefits: the commonly reported effects, including relaxation, reduced stress, and improved sense of balance.
Each section below builds directly on the previous one, forming a single connected progression from theory to evidence to practice. Promotional details about booking sessions or training programs are kept separate, so this guide stays focused purely on explaining how energy healing works.
The Science Behind It
From a scientific standpoint, the evidence is still developing. So far, no instruments have reliably measured a human “energy field,” and large clinical trials have generally found that energy healing performs no better than a placebo. That said, researchers have proposed plausible biological explanations for the benefits people report: slow, intentional touch and a calming environment can activate the parasympathetic nervous system, lowering heart rate, blood pressure, and cortisol levels. Studies on practices like Reiki and therapeutic touch have shown modest improvements in relaxation, anxiety, and pain perception—effects that may stem from the therapeutic interaction itself rather than a subtle energy field. In short, while the traditional energy model lacks direct scientific confirmation, the relaxation response triggered during sessions is a well-documented, measurable outcome.
What Happens During a Session
A typical session involves a brief conversation about your goals, followed by relaxed, light touch or hands hovering over the body while you rest fully clothed. Most people leave feeling calm and refreshed.
It lasts 30 to 60 minutes. You remain fully clothed and lie on a treatment table or sit comfortably while the practitioner gently places their hands on or just above your body, moving from head to feet. During this time, many clients report sensations of warmth, tingling, gentle pulsing, or deep relaxation; some even fall asleep. Emotional releases, such as spontaneous sighing or a sense of lightness, are also common. Afterward, most people describe feeling calm, balanced, and sometimes unusually energized, though individual experiences vary from session to session.
Common Modalities
Popular approaches include Reiki, therapeutic touch, qigong, and polarity therapy—each uses slightly different techniques, but all aim to restore energetic balance.
Key Benefits
Reported benefits include reduced stress and anxiety, improved sleep, relief from pain perception, and a greater sense of overall well-being.
How Does Energy Healing Work?
Energy healing is based on the idea that the body has a life force or energy field that can become blocked or depleted. Practitioners believe that by channeling, balancing, or clearing this energy, they support the body’s own capacity for relaxation and self-repair. While scientific evidence is still emerging, sessions are widely reported to reduce stress and promote a deep state of rest in which the body can restore itself.
What is the proposed mechanism? Practitioners describe three core actions: sensing areas of imbalance in the energy field, clearing or rebalancing blocked energy, and channeling energy to where it is needed. From a physiological perspective, the gentle, focused nature of sessions activates the relaxation response, lowering heart rate and stress hormones so the body can shift into rest-and-repair mode.
What Happens During an Energy Healing Session?
Regardless of the specific modality, a typical session follows a predictable four-stage flow:
- Consultation – you discuss your physical, emotional, and energetic concerns with the practitioner.
- Assessment – the practitioner senses or scans the energy field for areas of imbalance or blockage.
- Energy work – using light touch or hands held just above the body, the practitioner channels or clears energy.
- Integration – the session ends with a short rest period so the body can absorb the effects.
Most people leave sessions feeling relaxed and calm, which supports the body’s natural self-repair processes in the days that follow.
How Energy Healing Works: From Concept to Outcome
This guide explains the topic in one logical progression, with each part covered once:
- The core concept – what energy healing is and the theory behind how it works.
- The process – the four-stage session flow described above.
- The modalities – the main types of energy healing and how they differ.
- The evidence – what research currently says about its effectiveness.
- The outcomes – the benefits people typically report, such as reduced stress, improved sleep, and a greater sense of balance.
What Are the Main Energy Healing Modalities?
Several distinct practices fall under the energy healing umbrella. Reiki uses light touch or hands hovering above the body to channel energy. Therapeutic Touch and Healing Touch involve systematic hand movements to assess and rebalance the energy field. Qigong and Pranic Healing draw on breath, movement, and intention to direct energy. Other approaches include crystal healing, chakra balancing, and polarity therapy, each with different techniques but the same goal: restoring energetic flow.
How Modalities Differ
Each modality works within the same general structure but emphasizes a different mechanism, as summarized below:
| Modality | Core Mechanism | Typical Approach |
|---|---|---|
| Reiki | Channels universal life force energy | Light touch or hover of the hands |
| Healing / Therapeutic Touch | Clears and rebalances the human energy field | Systematic hand movements |
| Qigong / Pranic Healing | Circulates energy through body and field | Breath, movement, and intention |
| Medical Intuition | Assesses energetic patterns linked to health concerns | Mental scanning and reporting |
Reported Benefits
People most often seek energy healing for stress reduction, relaxation, and emotional balance. The commonly reported benefits fall into three main areas:
- Physical: improved sleep, relief from tension and discomfort, and deeper relaxation.
- Emotional and mental: reduced anxiety, greater mental clarity, and improved emotional balance.
- Overall well-being: an enhanced sense of calm, vitality, and connection between body and mind.
Many people use energy healing as a complementary practice alongside conventional medical care, not as a replacement for professional treatment.
Which Energy Healing Modalities Are Used?
Several well-known healing modalities exist, each with its own approach. Practitioners typically train in one or more of the following:
- Reiki — uses light hand placements to channel universal energy through the practitioner to the client.
- Healing Touch and Therapeutic Touch — involve deliberate clearing and balancing of the energy field with structured hand movements.
- Qigong and Pranic Healing — combine breath, movement, and focused intention to cultivate and direct energy.
- Acupuncture — works with the body’s meridian pathways using fine needles to regulate energy flow.
- Supportive tools — crystals, tuning forks, or sound bowls may complement any of the above modalities.
While the methods differ, each modality works through the same underlying premise: restoring balanced flow to the body’s energy system. Clients can discuss with their practitioner which approach best matches their goals and comfort level.
What Are the Benefits of Energy Healing?
Clients commonly seek energy healing for stress reduction, relief from tension, and support with emotional balance. Reported benefits include deeper relaxation, improved sleep, a greater sense of clarity, and enhanced overall well-being. While experiences vary, many people find it pairs well with conventional medical care as a complementary practice.
What Is the Definition Of An Energy Healer?
So, what is your definition of an energy healer? The energy healer is a catalyst. No miracles or magic are involved. An energy healer’s role is similar to that of a midwife. You help another person change from one state to another. How?
They channel direct frequencies of light and neutral, cleansing cosmic energy, directing it into the energetic field or space of the person they are healing. The energy healer directs it through their intention. Meaning that they have an intention for what that energy might be used for and how it might change what’s going on in that person’s energy field.
You could say the energy healer is a medical intuitive. A medical intuitive uses their psychic abilities to recognize and provide information and suggestions about their subject’s energy.
Who Can Benefit From Energy Healing Therapy?
Who should seek out an energy healer? The answer is simple—anyone needing help. Usually, someone sees an energy healer, or a medical intuitive, because they have a problem. Something doesn’t feel right in their world. They might have a physical illness, a mental disorder, or it’s some form of emotional issue. Something is often out of alignment in their existence, and they are coming to the energy healer to help bring them back into alignment. Or they come to the medical intuitive for information that can help them realign.
Safety and who should be cautious: Because energy healing is a complementary practice, it should never replace medical treatment. If you have a serious illness, injury, or mental health condition, always continue seeing your doctor alongside any energy work, and let your practitioner know your full medical history. Before booking a session, check the practitioner’s training, certifications, and reviews, and ask about their experience with your specific concern. Avoid anyone who promises to cure disease, discourages conventional care, or pressures you into expensive packages. When used responsibly as a complement to proper medical care, energy healing is generally gentle and safe for most people, including older adults and those managing chronic conditions.
Are There Different Energy Healing Therapies?
Many different energy healing modalities exist. Are any of these better than others? The answer is tricky. The primary response is whatever works best for you and your energy healer. At its core, energy healing combines energy and intention. It involves channeling and directing energy for a particular purpose or intention. This is what any energy healing modality does at its core.

Energy Healing Tools
Much of the reason this large array of energy-healing tools has been created stems from the attempt to categorize what is being done. To describe what is going on during a session. A regimen is formulated around what is being done during a session to make it seem more scientific. This is not flim-flam but an attempt to enhance the outcome. It tries to make sense to the human brain through a set of logical steps. Hold your hands in this orientation to support a successful healing outcome.
But in some sense, all energy healing is specific to the person and what they are going through at the moment. And so an effective energy healer is somebody capable of looking at the energy and entering the energy field of a person and seeing what’s going on. Then, customize an energetic approach that assists that person with their specific issue.
Some energy healing modalities may involve going through a sequence of hand positions or other protocols. This is fine because they provide a general energy tune-up or an energy injection into that person’s space. And that can be super helpful. But it can be even more helpful if the healer has developed their psychic abilities.
How Does Energy Healing Work In Conjunction With Your Psychic Abilities?
If your psychic abilities are active, you can see what is happening within the individual. You can see energy blockages or energy changing. Learning and understanding energy healing alongside psychic powers will give you a deeper understanding of what is going on within your patient.
In the energy healing courses I teach, I train healers to be medical intuitives and heal with the appropriate technique. What students are trained to do has little to do with any specific protocol. However, you do learn lots of energy-healing techniques. But they are open to the world of energy. They open you to receiving information and working with energy in real time.
The Benefits Of Energy Healing
What are some of the benefits of receiving an energy healing? They can be enumerated. Mainly, they can help you with your self-awareness. So usually, if you go to an energy healer or a medical intuitive, you have something wrong and need help understanding what’s causing it. An energy healing session can give you information that helps you understand your condition better. Then, you can take the steps necessary to alleviate the issue.
Another benefit of energy healing is an energy tune-up. This can help raise your vibrational frequency. This can help you release denser, heavier energies. It can help you release low-vibrational energy blocks and replace them with higher-vibrational frequencies.
Energy healing can help you relax, release tension, and release stress. It can refresh and rejuvenate your energy and help increase vitality. Energy healing can help you with almost any kind of issue:
- trouble sleeping
- tense and nervous
- physical pain
- emotional turmoil
- trauma
- control blood pressure
- immune system
Receiving healing energy helps accelerate the body’s self-healing abilities and the body’s self-healing process itself. So, you are supercharging the body’s healing mechanism, if you will.
Medical Intuitive Sessions
A medical intuitive session is an energy diagnostic tool.
It may include insight into your condition. It can help you establish the root cause of your challenge. Often, a physical problem is the end result of something that started before it manifested. More often than not, there is an emotional cause stemming from some kind of trauma, which is the root cause of your health condition. Working at that level of finding the core beliefs or the root cause and shifting those can have a domino effect, reaching forward into the physical issue.
An energy healer or medical intuitive can help you see beyond the symptoms you are experiencing and understand your body’s messages. Why is your body having that symptom? Because it wants you to listen. It wants to tell you something. And usually, it tries to tell you through its emotions, but you ignore it. And it’s shouting louder because it needs you to pay attention, and it does so by causing illnesses of some kind.

You Are Energy
How does healing work in the body? Your body is energy. Everything is made of the same energy. And your energies interact with that energy. So often, the issue isn’t even the issue you are feeling.
So yes, sometimes you find foreign energy in somebody’s energy system. Energy that belongs to another person and is involved in their life. There’s so much energy. It’s like you live in a soup of energy. Sometimes, you might deal with another person’s energy in your space.
For example, you attend to a sick relative. You may be the primary caregiver. You may find yourself feeling the same way that person feels. And it’s because you are absorbing their energy like a sponge. However, their energy would only stick in your space if something within you is holding on to it.
Maybe the person that you are caring for feels deeply unworthy, and the deep unworthiness has led to depression. The depression led to some other physical conditions. You may find that you feel similar. Learning to cope with energy is a tool everyone can use. And just a tiny jump from there is energy healing. So, anyone can learn to do energy healing.

In Pain – Need A Healing?

Questions and comments from listeners during the broadcast of Energy Healing Therapy And How Does Energy Healing Work:
- Katie – Do you have to be able to “read” someone to give them energy healing? Do you need to sense their energy in any way or at any point during healing?
- Brian – What happens in cases where energy healing seems to move through people and heal without conscious intention, like it knows where to go and what to do? Eckhart Tolle had mentioned sitting with people in their presence early on; they told him they could feel healing, yet he wasn’t trying to heal. He had no intention, but it happened as if he were some kind of conduit. He didn’t know it was happening until they gave him feedback. I’ve also heard of spontaneous healing happening this way. How does this aspect of energy healing work?
- Brian – That makes so much sense, thank you! You’re right about Eckhart’s ability to bring people into the present moment! Of course, he’s talked about how people can get addicted to that as well, much like what you mentioned about how people can get addicted to the healer, like a fix.
- Cole – Dr. Lesley does great energy healing; she can see the changes taking place, and you can feel the energy shift!
- Victoria – How do you heal yourself to become aligned with Spirit so you can live a happy, harmonious life?
- Lorraine – So, does any physical condition exist because it was created by negative emotions or energy?
- Budaj – Thank you for your insight! That resonates with me as a teacher because I can teach any student, but I can teach better, and they’ll learn better if I know where they’re at to begin with.
