The Shortest Day Of The Year, An Ending And Beginning.
How long is the shortest day of the year and what does this have to do with your spirituality and spiritual path? Slowly the days have been getting shorter and shorter. Summer has left us completely. Fall has hit and sometimes with a vengeance. Final the Winter Solstice is upon us. It is the longest and shortest day of the year. Seasons change and with each change of the seasons we get affected in different ways. At this time of the year, people suffer from a lack of sunlight and many become depressed. We look to the oncoming winter as inevitable. Some people love the winter and the activities others, however, dread the cold and dark. However many others celebrate this day and the oncoming winter season. The Winter solstice means many different things to many different peoples.
What is the Winter Solstice? The scientific description of the Astronomical event is when the Earth tilts to a position where the northern hemisphere is furthest away from the sun hence giving us the shortest day of the year. This causes less light to reach that region and the days become shorter. Hence the season changes to winter. The word Solstice is derived from the Latin word solstitium, meaning ‘Sun standing still‘. There is also much spiritual significance to do with the solstices. Many of the ancient religions based their rites and rituals around the solstices as well. These are still carried out today. One of the most well-known sects to revere this day are the Druids.
Many mythologies and traditions have been associated with the solstices. This can be observed by the physical remains and archaeological sites worldwide, such as Stonehenge in England and Newgrange in Ireland. The primary axis of both of these monuments seems to have been carefully planned and situated. In Newgrange, a sight-line points to sunrise the day of the winter solstice. In Stonehenge the day of the winter solstice the sight line points to the sunset. Again at Stonehenge, the Great Trilithon was oriented outwards from the middle of the monument its smooth flat face was turned towards the midwinter Sun.
